Get into the #spiritofsingleton with some fair dinkum festivities this Australia Day

20/01/2021

Whether you’re firing up the barbecue, hitting the pool or just taking it easy this Australia Day, the Singleton community is being encouraged to come together through virtual magic to celebrate being an Aussie on 26 January 2021.

While COVID-19 restrictions have vetoed a community twilight event and capped invitees to the Australia Day ceremony, Singleton’s Australia Day Committee is urging everyone across the LGA to get into the #spiritofsingleton by posting photos of their own celebrations on Facebook and Instagram, and watching the livestream of the official proceedings including the announcement of the Citizen of the Year and the Australia Day Guest Address by Channel 9 news correspondent Charles Croucher simply by tuning into Council’s Facebook page.

You can also get into the spirit IRL with a free Australia Day swim at Singleton Gym & Swim, including pool inflatables. All you need to do is register for your preferred session at 10-11.30am,12pm-1.30pm or 2pm-3.30pm.

Australia Day Committee chairperson Cr Danny Thompson said although some celebrations might look different, it was important to recognise Australia Day as the one time we celebrate the people who make our community.

“Australia Day is important because it’s the day we stop to think how lucky we are a) to be Australian, and b) to live in Singleton,” he said.

“And that’s never been truer given the year we’ve been through.

“One of the most important values of the Australian way of life is looking after each other, and we saw evidence of that in the bushfires, we saw evidence of that in the drought, and now with COVID we’ve seen the evidence of what we’re prepared to do to stop the spread.

“But while we’re taking every precaution, we also want to encourage our community to continue to come together to celebrate Australia Day.

“Our official ceremony will go ahead, including an Army Guard, Singleton Town Band, an address by our Australia Day Guest Charles Croucher, a Citizenship Ceremony for six new Australians and the announcement of our 2021 Citizen of the Year. But this year, we will be professionally streaming the event live via Council’s Facebook page, and it’s as easy as tuning in at 9.30am.

“We’d also love to see people sharing their photos of how they’re celebrating on Facebook and Instagram using #spiritofsingleton and have the chance to win one of 25 $50 Spend in Singleton gift cards.

“Whatever you’re doing this Australia Day, we’d love to include your posts in a snapshot of how we celebrated in Singleton in 2021.”
