Virtual meeting sets platform for real engagement on Council’s program of actions for 2020-2021
With social distancing prohibiting community gatherings, Singleton Council is inviting the community to discuss the draft 2020-2021 Operational Plan at an online meeting on Wednesday 13 May 2020.
The draft plan is currently on exhibition until 27 May 2020, setting out Council’s activities and budget for the coming financial year.
Key inclusions in the draft document are:
- capital expenditure on renewing and building new assets of $45 million
- a rates and charges rebate package will be available for those financially-impacted by COVID-19
- actions to broaden Council’s income streams, support the community and stimulate the local economy
- continuation of major projects including the Town Centre Upgrade - Stage 2 and Arts and Cultural Centre
- program of community events to foster connectedness post COVID-19
Mayor of Singleton, Cr Sue Moore said because of social distancing and the temporary closure of local print media, Council was working as hard as possible to ensure everyone in our community had the opportunity to review the document, ask questions and provide feedback.
A brochure providing details about the draft Plan and Council’s financial management will be delivered to all households across the local government area, and will also be available at other locations including takeaway food outlets and community outreach services including Council’s Library delivery service. A digital version will also be available on Council’s website.
A virtual community meeting via Zoom will also be held for people to talk with General Manager Jason Linnane and senior staff.
“The circumstances we find ourselves in have prompted a raft of changes to the way we do things, with a greater emphasis on how we can connect with each other online,” Cr Moore said.
“Last month’s virtual Council meeting conducted on Zoom proved to be very successful, and I’m looking forward to extending the platform to everyone across our LGA to be part of the decision-making process for the next year of Council’s operations.
“I encourage everyone to view the draft documents on Council’s website or contact Council for a hard copy, and register for the meeting to be held on Wednesday 13 May at 4.30pm.”
General Manager Jason Linnane said the meeting was also an opportunity for people to ask questions about Council’s Community Support Package, which was designed to provide assistance to anyone impacted by the COVID-19 crisis.
He said that depending on demand from the community, and allowing for news of the meeting to reach residents, a second virtual meeting could be held the following week.
“We know these are difficult circumstances for many people in our community, and we have a role to support our residents and businesses in any way we can,” he said.
“We have outlined a raft of measures that will impact Council’s resources but we are adamant this is the right thing to do for the people in our community.
“I’d love to talk to as many people as possible about what we are doing now and what we will be doing into the new financial year as a result of the COVID-19 crisis and because of the actions laid out in the draft 2020-2021 Operational Plan and our Community Support Package.
“To register for the meeting, contact council on 02 6578 7290 or email firstname.lastname@example.org for the Zoom link to be sent to you, or if you prefer, Council staff are available to talk to you personally.”
