Singleton unites online to mark National Reconciliation Week
In an unusual National Reconciliation Week event, the community of Singleton joined together online this morning in the spirit of harmony for a special flag raising ceremony.
The theme for this year’s National Reconciliation Week is ‘In This Together’, which appropriately represents much more than the role everyone plays on the journey to reconciliation.
Cr Moore said it also nods to how the community has come together to overcome the impacts of COVID-19.
Social distancing meant that only 10 people could be physically present for the ceremony, which also included a Welcome to Country and Mayoral Welcome.
“Our National Reconciliation Week event in Singleton is usually an occasion where we encourage everyone to come together to celebrate the shared histories, cultures and achievements of all Australians, and particularly those of Aboriginal and Torres Strait peoples,” Cr Moore said.
“But this year, as Reconciliation Australia marks 20 years, we find ourselves in circumstances where that can’t happen.
“Yet even in the midst of a global pandemic, the significance of National Reconciliation Week is as strong as ever."
