Proposed recategorisation of Crown land prompts public hearing for Burdekin Park Draft Plan of Management (2020)

A virtual public hearing will be held in relation to an update of the Plan of Management for Burdekin Park to formally change the categorisation of the Crown land portion of the site from “General Community Use” to “Park”.

Singleton Council has worked with Architects of Arcadia to update the Burdekin Park Plan of Management (2017) to meet requirements under the Crown Land Management Act 2016 that allows Crown land to be managed under the provisions of 40A of the Local Government Act 1993, with updated Plans of Management to be prepared by July 2021.

The Burdekin Park Draft Plan of Management (2020) is now on public exhibition until 20 July 2020 for community feedback, which will also include a public hearing on 24 June to comply with requirements of the Crown Land Management Act.

Mark Ihlein, Council’s Director Planning and Infrastructure Services, said the current Burdekin Park Plan of Management was adopted in 2017 as the result of extensive community consultation.

“Council has taken the wishes of the community raised during that process on board, and the 2020 revision does not propose any further changes apart from formalising the change in categorisation for the Crown land portion from ‘General Community Use’ to ‘Park’,” he said.

“The categorisation of ‘Park’ was chosen as the historical and future preferred management of that part of the land complies with the core objectives for ‘Park’ as set out in the Local Government Act.

“Council officers subsequently requested an additional categorisation of ‘Park’ to be approved by Department of Planning, Industry and Environment under section 3.23 (d) (i) of the Crown Land Management Act. This request was granted by the delegate of the Minister for Water, Property and Housing on 19 January 2020.

“In keeping with the requirements of the Act, we are now publicly exhibiting the draft Plan of Management and will hold a virtual public hearing via Zoom on 24 June from 5.30pm to 6.30pm and invite the people of our community to provide feedback or be part of the hearing.”

Mr Ihlein said the independent public hearing was not a forum for discussion on other aspects of the Draft Plan of Management.

“There are no major changes to the Burdekin Park Plan of Management itself, apart from the proposed recategorisation of the land,” he said.

“Burdekin Park is an important site to Singleton because of its historical significance and connection to Benjamin Singleton, as the home of the Singleton Historical Museum and a number of war memorials, and Council is following the requirements under the legislation to ensure it is appropriately managed into the future.”

The Burdekin Park Draft Plan of Management is on public exhibition until 20 July 2020 and submissions are invited. The document is available for viewing on Council’s website or in hard copy at Council’s Administration Building, Singleton Visitor Information Centre and Singleton Public Library.
