Singleton ratepayers encouraged to apply for rates and charges rebate
With rates notices hitting mailboxes across the local government area, Singleton Council is encouraging all eligible ratepayers to take advantage of a rebate to cover the 2.6 per cent increase in rates and charges between 2019/2020 and 2020/2021.
The rebate scheme is an initiative under Council’s COVID-19 Community Support Package, which is providing more than $2 million in tangible assistance for residents, businesses and community organisations to recover from the impacts of the pandemic.
Mark Wiblen, Council’s Acting Director Business and Community Services, said the rebate was adopted as part of Council’s 2020/2021 Operational Plan along with an extension of payment for the first instalment to 30 September 2020.
“We understand this is a very challenging time for our community, and especially those people experiencing a direct loss of income because of the COVID-19 crisis,” he said.
“That’s why the rates and charges rebate scheme is a centrepiece of our Community Support Package.
“The rebate applies to rates, waste and fixed water and sewer costs to bridge the gap between 2019/2020 and 2020/2021, so that no one adversely financially impacted by COVID-19 will pay one cent more this year than they did last year.
“All residential, business and farmland ratepayers who have been financially impacted by COVID-19 in any way are eligible to apply.”
Mr Wiblen said more than 50 applications had already been made, but with rates notices now being delivered, Council was looking for more to come.
“We want everyone who has been hit financially because of the COVID-19 response to take advantage of this scheme,” he said.
“It’s simple and easy to apply, you don’t need to disclose your financial history and most importantly, it’s completely confidential.
