Vale Neil McNamara

31/8/20

It is with great sadness that I acknowledge the passing of a stalwart of the Singleton community in Freeman of the Shire, former Mayor and Wambo Coal Singleton of Hall of Fame inductee, Neil McNamara.

Quite simply, Mr McNamara has an unparalleled record of service to the Singleton community. He was an exemplary leader during a period of significant growth and change for our local government area, not least the amalgamation of Patrick Plains Shire Council and Singleton Municipal Council in 1976, then becoming the first President of the new Singleton Shire Council in a role he held for 23 successive years.

He leaves behind a legacy that has shaped our local government area now, and will continue to underpin the Singleton we are building for the future. Mr McNamara stepped up when our community needed support and guidance in the early stages of coal mining expansion, initiating annual community discussions with the coal industry, leading Council’s negotiations to remove trucks from the town, and developing industrial estates and residential subdivisions to cope with population and industrial growth. Most tellingly, he was the leader the community needed at a crucial time as Singleton’s population grew from 12,000 to 23,000 people over a period of 25 years.

Mr McNamara was awarded the Order of Australia Medal for his services to the Singleton community in 1984 and was made a Freeman of the Singleton Shire in 2000.

He carried out this service to the community in addition to running a dairy farm and cattle business and participating in many associated industry and community organisations.

Most importantly, Mr McNamara was a dedicated husband, father and grandfather. He and his wife Joan were married in September 1952 and together had six children and many grandchildren. Sadly, Joan passed away on 20 July 2020.

Our thoughts are with the McNamara family at this time.

On behalf of the people of Singleton, I pay our respects and appreciation for the lives of Neil and Joan and the legacy they leave for our local government area for generations to come.

Vale Neil McNamara.
