New general waste collection service lifts the lid on a new era for rubbish

State-of-the-art trucks, all new bins and a dedicated customer service centre will be the hallmarks of Singleton Council’s new general waste collection service, with a new contractor to start collecting bins from 5 November 2018.

JR Richards and Sons has been awarded a 10-year contract to deliver the general waste (red lid) collection service as the result of a competitive tendering process.

The agreement will also deliver a significant cost saving, which will help offset forecast increases in kerbside recycling.

But Mark Ihlein, Council’s Director Planning and Infrastructure Services Group, said most important was that most Singleton residents would not notice a change in their rubbish collection, except for the arrival of a new bin.

“The new contract comes into effect on Thursday 1 November 2018, with the new bin roll out to commence the following Monday 5 November 2018,” he said.

“There will be a scheduled delivery of serial-numbered bins and residents will be notified of when their new bin will arrive. We are working very closely with JR Richards to ensure a smooth transition.”

Mr Ihlein said the contract would also include an annual bulk rubbish collection.

“Residents will see the collection service delivered using Council branded state-of-the-art trucks, comprehensive bin management and maintenance, a dedicated customer service centre, monitoring and reporting of the volumes collected by the service, and an education program focused on the introduction of a food organics collection in the coming years,” he said.

“Singleton has an excellent track record when it comes to waste management and recycling, and the introduction of the new contract will build on and enhance our community’s commitment to reducing waste.”
